Electrical Rough-In Inspection in Los Angeles: What to Expect
Updated 2 min read
If you're remodeling, building an addition, or putting up new construction in Los Angeles, your project has to pass an electrical rough-in inspection before the walls get closed up. Here's what that means and how to sail through it.
What Is a Rough-In Inspection?
The rough-in is the stage after all the wiring, boxes, and panel work are installed but before drywall goes up — while everything is still visible. A city inspector reviews the work at this point because once the walls are closed, no one can see what's behind them. It's one of the most important checkpoints in any electrical project.
What the Inspector Checks
- Wiring methods and cable type are correct for the application
- Boxes are the right size, securely mounted, and not overfilled
- Conductor sizing matches the breakers and load
- Grounding and bonding are properly run
- Required circuits — kitchen, bath, laundry, and dedicated circuits — are in place
- GFCI/AFCI protection is provided where code requires it
- Proper support and spacing of cables and conduit
Common Reasons Rough-Ins Fail
Most failures come down to small, avoidable details: overfilled boxes, missing cable staples, incorrect box height, missing nail plates protecting cable, or not enough conductor left in the box for the inspector. A licensed electrician who does this every day knows exactly what each inspector looks for.
Why It Pays to Use a Licensed Electrician
A failed inspection means rework, delays, and a re-inspection. Doing the rough-in right the first time keeps your project on schedule and your permit on track — and protects you when it's time to sell or insure the property. This is part of every job we do, from single-room remodels to full new construction electrical.
