Local guide: electrical work in Pasadena

PWP, not SCE

Most Pasadena homes get power from Pasadena Water and Power (PWP), and the City of Pasadena issues electrical permits. A panel or service change involves both, and we coordinate the two for you.

  • Not sure which utility you have? Some edge and unincorporated addresses are on SCE.
  • Guide: PWP vs SCE in Pasadena

PWP panel upgrade rebate

PWP lists $1,000 (plus $500 for income-qualified customers) for upgrading to a 200A+ panel. It requires:

  • Dedicated 240V/30A circuits for both a Level 2 EV charger and an electric water heater
  • A newly installed charger or water heater
  • A C-10 electrician and a final, signed City permit
  • An application within 180 days of permit final, with an itemized paid invoice and photos

We set up the invoice, photos and paperwork to match. Terms can change, so confirm with PWP. More: panel rebate guide, PWP battery rebate, panel upgrade cost

What the PWP rebate covers

PWP's terms list these eligible costs:

  • The electric panel itself (excluding shipping and tax)
  • City of Pasadena permit fees and PWP electric service planning fees, if any
  • A newly installed 240V outlet where an appliance needs one

Charger rules: a Level 2 (240V) charger with a J1772 or Tesla plug, NRTL-certified and wall-mounted at the service address. Switchable Level 1/Level 2 portable chargers don't qualify. PWP says to allow up to six weeks for the check.

Pasadena permits

Panels, EV charger circuits, service changes and most rewiring need a City of Pasadena permit and inspection.

  1. Site visit and load calculation
  2. PWP coordination if the service or meter changes
  3. Permit, install, city inspection, PWP reconnection
  4. You get the finaled permit, which PWP's rebate also needs

Craftsman & older homes

Bungalows and 1920s homes were wired for a few lights per room. We check for:

  • Knob-and-tube or ungrounded (two-prong) wiring
  • Overloaded or double-tapped breakers, old fuse panels
  • Missing GFCI protection
  • Undersized service for an EV charger or heat pump

We rewire in phases and work carefully around plaster and trim. Exterior changes in landmark districts may need review.

Eaton Fire repairs & rebuilds

Since the January 2025 Eaton Fire we've helped northeast Pasadena and Altadena owners with:

  • Safety checks of panels, meters and service drops before power is restored
  • Repairs to fire- and smoke-damaged service equipment and wiring
  • All-electric-ready wiring for rebuilds and ADUs

Altadena is on SCE: Altadena SWITCH rebates

EV chargers

As Tesla Energy Certified and EVITP certified installers, we put in Tesla Wall Connectors and other Level 2 chargers. We check panel capacity first, so you get load management when that's enough, or an upgrade that also qualifies for PWP's rebate.

Electrician in Pasadena: FAQs

Is my Pasadena home on PWP or SCE?

Most homes inside Pasadena city limits are on PWP. Altadena and some nearby unincorporated addresses are on SCE. Your bill shows which.

Does a panel upgrade qualify for a PWP rebate?
