PWP Battery Rebate 2026: $350/kWh for Pasadena Homes

PWP Battery Rebate 2026: $350/kWh for Pasadena Homes

Pasadena Water & Power (PWP) will pay $350 per kWh toward a new home battery, but the rebate is paid on paperwork, not on the install. The check only comes if your permit, invoice and enrollment form match what PWP asks for. A missing line on the invoice or a late filing can stall the rebate. We're a licensed C-10 contractor and Tesla Energy Certified installer, and we build every battery job around that paperwork from day one. This guide covers what PWP requires, what your permit and invoice must show, and the mistakes to avoid. Not sure where to start? Request a free estimate or call 747-255-8595.

What the PWP Battery Rebate Pays

PWP's Residential Battery Storage Rebate pays $350 per kWh of battery capacity for a qualifying system. Customers enrolled in one of PWP's income-qualified bill assistance programs (EUAP, Cares and Cares Plus), or in its Medical Assistance Program, get an additional $200 per kWh. The equity bonus applies only if you're enrolled when you submit your application.

The rebate is for PWP residential electric customers and covers new systems installed on or after January 1, 2026. Program funds are limited, and PWP can change the terms at any time, so confirm current details on the PWP program page before you buy. We don't promise approval or payout dates, because PWP decides both.

Does Your Home Qualify?

PWP's published rules are specific. Your battery and installation need to meet all of these:

  • Customer-owned. Leased batteries and systems bought through a power purchase agreement (PPA) aren't eligible.
  • Installed by a licensed C-10 electrical contractor. A DIY or unlicensed install doesn't qualify.
  • New UL 9540 home battery system built with UL 9540A tested components.
  • At least two hours of duration at continuous rating, and round-trip efficiency of at least 85%.
  • Remote telemetry and control through the manufacturer's portal or an approved aggregator API.
  • A 10-year manufacturer warranty with at least 70% capacity left at the end of the term.
  • One rebate per PWP service address, for life.

Your home also has to be on PWP, not SCE. Pasadena city homes are PWP. Altadena, South Pasadena and San Marino are SCE and can't use this rebate. Our PWP vs SCE guide explains how to tell.

What Your Permit Must Show

PWP asks for a final, signed electrical permit with your application. In Pasadena, a battery install needs a City of Pasadena permit, and a licensed electrician pulls it. We pull every permit under our C-10 license. Because the rebate depends on a final sign-off, the permit has to be closed out after inspection. An open permit means you can't apply yet.

Your application deadline starts at final permit approval. PWP must receive a complete application within 180 days of that date. Put the date on your calendar the day the inspector signs off. For more on how permits work in the city, see our Pasadena electrical permits guide.

What Your Invoice Must Show

PWP wants a final, paid, itemized invoice from the licensed electrician with the electrician's license number and business information. It should include at least:

  1. Total cost of the project
  2. Date of project completion
  3. Project address
  4. Battery capacity
  5. Brand and model of the battery, inverter and monitoring control

A one-line "install battery, $X" invoice is the risky kind. Ask your contractor for itemized costs and the exact model numbers before you pay the final balance. Your invoice should also show the electrician's license number, and ours shows #1027421.

The 36-Month Demand Response Agreement

You also upload a signed PWP Demand Response (DR) or virtual power plant (VPP) agreement form. It says you'll enroll the rebated battery in PWP's first applicable DR or VPP program for at least 36 months after that program launches. PWP's page says enrollment must happen within 90 days of launch if your site is technically eligible, and you authorize meter data and device telemetry sharing.

Read this one carefully. If you decline to enroll without an approved exemption, or leave the program in the first 12 months after launch, PWP may claw back 20% of the original incentive on a pro rata basis. Choose a battery whose manufacturer portal or aggregator connection can support this.

Timeline, Fee Waiver and What to Do First

Once PWP approves your application, it says your rebate check should arrive in 6 to 8 weeks. PWP also says it isn't charging plan review and inspection fees for solar and battery projects "for a limited time." That waiver covers only PWP-related costs. Structural, Building & Safety, meter and other fees may still apply.

Here's the order we follow:

  1. Check you're a PWP residential electric customer and own the system.
  2. Plan the battery location, panel capacity and equipment with your electrician. If your panel is full or undersized, a panel upgrade may come first.
  3. Pull the permit, install, and pass inspection to get the final signed permit.
  4. Get the final itemized invoice and signed DR/VPP form.
  5. Submit everything on PWP's portal inside 180 days.

If you're comparing equipment, see our Tesla Powerwall installation and home battery backup pages. Also considering the panel rebate? We cover it in our Pasadena panel upgrade rebate guide. For our full local work, see electrician Pasadena.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the PWP battery rebate?

PWP pays $350 per kWh of qualifying battery capacity, plus an extra $200 per kWh for customers enrolled in its income-qualified or Medical Assistance programs. Confirm current amounts with PWP before you buy.

Can I get the rebate on a leased battery or PPA system?

No. PWP says the battery must be owned by the customer. Leased systems and systems bought through a power purchase agreement aren't eligible.

How long do I have to apply?

PWP must receive your completed application within 180 days from the date of final permit approval. Applications after that window don't qualify.

Do I have to join a PWP demand response program?

Yes. You agree to enroll the battery in PWP's first applicable DR or VPP program for at least 36 months after it launches. PWP may claw back part of the rebate if you decline without an approved exemption or leave early.

Can I use this rebate if I live in Altadena or South Pasadena?

No. The program is only for PWP residential electric customers. Altadena and South Pasadena homes are served by SCE, so check your electric bill to see which utility you have.
