Home Battery Backup Installation in Los Angeles
6 min read

A red-flag wind warning goes up, the power drops, and suddenly the most important appliance in the house is the refrigerator. That is usually the moment Los Angeles homeowners start pricing out a battery — and the moment the wiring details start to matter more than the brochure.
What a Home Battery Backup System Actually Includes
The battery is only one piece. A code-compliant home battery backup installation normally involves several components working together:
- Battery module(s) — typically 10 to 16 kWh of usable capacity each, stackable for more runtime
- A hybrid or AC-coupled inverter that converts stored DC power to the 240V AC your house uses
- Automatic transfer equipment that isolates your home from the grid the instant utility power fails
- A critical load panel carrying only the circuits you want backed up, or a smart panel that manages loads dynamically
- Monitoring so you can see state of charge and what is drawing power
The battery gets the marketing. The transfer equipment and the panel work decide whether the system actually carries your house through an outage.
Whole-House Backup or a Critical Load Panel?
This is the first real decision, and it drives most of the cost.
A critical load panel is the common choice in older Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley homes. Selected circuits — refrigerator, a few lighting circuits, networking, bedroom outlets, a furnace blower or mini-split — move onto a subpanel fed by the battery. One battery can run that set of loads for a day or more.
Whole-house battery backup keeps every circuit live, including air conditioning and electric cooking. It needs enough inverter output to start an AC compressor and usually two or more batteries, and in practice it often requires a service upgrade so the battery can tie into a panel with the busbar rating and breaker space to accept it.
Think in terms of what you need running at 2 a.m. during a windstorm, not what you would like running.
Does Your Electrical Panel Need an Upgrade First?
Often, yes — and this is the step that surprises people. Battery systems interconnect at your main service, and the National Electrical Code limits how much backfed current a panel busbar can accept relative to its rating.
Homes built from the 1920s through the 1950s across Pasadena, Altadena, Alhambra, South Pasadena and nearby cities frequently still run 100-amp service, a full breaker panel, or an obsolete panel brand with no listed breakers still available. Any of those makes an electrical panel upgrade part of the battery project rather than a separate job.
A licensed electrician should run a load calculation on your actual service before quoting a battery, not after. If you are also planning an EV charger installation, put both on the same load calculation and the same permit — meaningfully cheaper than doing them a year apart.
Battery Backup vs. a Standby Generator
Both solve outages, differently:
- Noise — a battery is silent; a standby generator runs an engine a few feet from a neighbor's window
- Fuel — a battery needs none; a generator needs natural gas or propane
- Runtime — a generator runs as long as fuel lasts; a battery runs until depleted, unless solar recharges it the next day
- Heavy loads — generators start large air conditioners more easily; batteries need inverter capacity sized for it
- Daily value — a battery can shift usage away from peak-rate hours; a generator sits idle between outages
- Maintenance — batteries are largely hands-off; generators need periodic service and exercise cycles
Paired with solar, a battery recharges every morning, which is why it tends to win for multi-day wildfire-season outages in the foothills.
Permits, Interconnection, and Incentives Around Los Angeles
Energy storage is permitted work. Expect an electrical permit and inspection from your city or county building department, plus a utility interconnection application. Which utility depends on your city, and it matters:
- Most of the area we serve — Los Angeles, Altadena, Arcadia, Alhambra, San Marino, Monrovia, Temple City and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley — interconnects through Southern California Edison (SCE).
- Pasadena is served by Pasadena Water & Power (PWP), a municipal utility with its own application process and its own rebate programs. PWP customers do not go through SCE; confirm current terms directly with PWP.
- Glendale (Glendale Water & Power) and Burbank (Burbank Water and Power) also run their own municipal programs — check the utility's current rebate program rather than assuming SCE terms apply.
California's Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) has supported residential storage, with higher tiers for customers in high fire-threat districts or on medical baseline, and a federal tax credit has applied to qualifying systems. Both change. Verify current amounts and deadlines with the program and a tax professional rather than budgeting on a number you read online.
What Home Battery Backup Installation Costs
Pricing varies with capacity, panel condition and how far the battery sits from the service. As rough planning ranges in the Los Angeles market:
- Single battery (roughly 10–16 kWh) with a critical load panel: commonly $12,000–$20,000 installed
- Each additional battery: often $7,000–$12,000
- A required 200-amp service upgrade: typically $3,000–$6,000 on top
- Long conduit runs, detached garages or panel relocation add more
Treat those as ranges, not quotes. Incentives, permit fees and site conditions move the final number, so get a written scope and estimate for your address.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a home battery run my house during an outage?
With a critical load panel carrying a refrigerator, lights, networking and outlets, one 13 kWh battery commonly lasts a day or more. Add central air conditioning or electric cooking and that can drop to a few hours. With solar recharging daily, runtime becomes effectively indefinite in good weather.
Do I need solar to install a battery?
No. A battery can charge from the grid and still provide backup, including overnight on off-peak rates. Solar makes it far more useful during multi-day outages, because the battery refills each morning instead of running down once.
Will a battery backup run my air conditioner?
That depends on inverter output, not battery capacity. A single inverter may not handle the inrush of a large compressor starting. Options include a soft starter on the AC unit, a second inverter, or leaving the AC off the backed-up loads.
Can a battery be installed in my garage?
Usually, yes — garage walls are the most common location in Los Angeles homes. Listed clearances, ambient temperature limits and protection from vehicle impact all apply, and some products are rated for outdoor wall mounting instead. Your installer should confirm placement against the manufacturer's listing and local code.
Do I need a permit for a home battery in Los Angeles?
Yes. Energy storage installations require a permit and inspection, and the utility requires an interconnection agreement before the system may operate. A licensed contractor pulls the permit and handles the interconnection paperwork as part of the job.
