Electrical Panel Relocation Cost in Los Angeles

Electrical Panel Relocation Cost in Los Angeles

Some electrical panels end up in the worst possible place — buried in a bedroom closet, or on the exact wall a garage conversion needs for a door. Moving one is routine work for a licensed electrician, but it is service-level work: permits, a utility shutdown, and a bigger price tag than most homeowners expect.

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Move a Panel

An electrical panel relocation is rarely cosmetic. The reasons usually come down to a few situations:

  • Remodels. A kitchen, bathroom, or laundry redesign puts cabinets or a new wall where the panel sits.
  • ADUs and garage conversions. Converting a garage into living space usually means the panel moves and a subpanel is added for the new unit. See our guide to ADU electrical wiring in Los Angeles.
  • Code clearance problems. Panels are not permitted in clothes closets or bathrooms, and one needs roughly 30 inches of working width and 36 inches of clear depth in front. Blocked panels get flagged at inspection.
  • Solar, batteries, and EV charging. A panel in a back corner of the house can make an EV charger installation or a battery tie-in far more expensive than moving the panel outside would be.
  • Utility access. SCE and LADWP want the meter reachable from outside, not through a locked yard or crawl space.

What Moving an Electrical Panel Actually Involves

When people ask how hard it is to move an electrical panel, the panel itself is the easy part. The work around it takes the day:

  • Load calculation and plan. Your electrician sizes the service and decides whether the existing panel can be reused at the new location.
  • Permit. An electrical permit is pulled with LADBS or your city's building department before work starts.
  • Utility coordination. The meter is pulled and service disconnected, then reconnected after inspection — that scheduling drives the timeline, not the labor.
  • New service point. New riser or underground conduit, meter socket, and main panel go in at the new spot.
  • Feeder and branch circuits. Every circuit has to reach the new panel, either extended through junction boxes or re-fed from a subpanel at the old location.
  • Inspection and reconnect. The city signs off, the utility reconnects, and circuits are labeled and tested.

What Panel Relocation Costs in Los Angeles

Cost to move an electrical panel depends far more on distance and service work than on the panel itself. These are realistic Los Angeles ranges, not quotes — pricing varies by home, city, and utility requirements:

  • Short move on the same wall (a few feet, meter stays put): roughly $1,200–$2,500.
  • Relocation to a different exterior wall with a new meter and service point: roughly $3,500–$8,000.
  • Relocation combined with a 200-amp upgrade: often $5,000–$12,000, since the panel, meter, and service conductors are all new.
  • Overhead-to-underground conversions or long feeder runs: add trenching and conduit costs on top.

What drives the price

  • How far the panel moves, and whether the meter moves with it
  • Whether circuits can be extended or need a subpanel at the old location
  • Whether the old panel is a Zinsco or Federal Pacific unit that should be replaced, not reused

Permits, Inspection, and Utility Timing

Moving a panel is permitted work everywhere in Los Angeles County — no licensed contractor does this job without a permit and inspection. Expect power off for most of a working day, sometimes into a second if the inspection and utility reconnect land on different days. Plan around it: refrigerators, medical equipment, and home offices need a heads-up. If something goes wrong mid-project, our emergency electricians are available around the clock.

Relocate, Upgrade, or Both?

If your panel is at capacity, decades old, or a known-defective brand, relocating it without upgrading wastes money — you pay for the service work twice. Since the expensive part is the service and the permit, doing both at once often costs only marginally more. Our electrical panel upgrade page walks through when an upgrade makes sense on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a permit to move an electrical panel?

Yes. Relocating a panel or meter requires an electrical permit and a city inspection, and the utility will not reconnect service without sign-off. Unpermitted panel work is a common problem flagged when a home is sold.

How much does it cost to move an electrical panel?

In Los Angeles, most relocations land between about $1,200 for a short move on the same wall and $8,000 or more for a full relocation with a new meter. Adding a 200-amp upgrade pushes it higher. Get a written estimate — prices vary by home and city.

Can I move my electrical panel myself?

No. The job involves service conductors ahead of the main breaker, which stay energized until the utility pulls the meter. In California this is licensed C-10 work; doing it yourself voids insurance coverage and fails inspection.

How long does a panel relocation take?

The physical work is usually one to two days. The full project, including the permit and scheduling the utility disconnect and reconnect, commonly runs one to three weeks.

Can an electrical panel be inside a closet or bathroom?

No. Panels are not allowed in bathrooms or clothes closets, and they need clear working space in front. Either location is a legitimate reason to relocate, and inspectors will call it out.
